Coast to Coast Bike Ride 2018

Our coast-to-coast cycle

On the 17th August, Eccleston Scout Group and Yarrow Viking Explorers took on the challenge of a huge bike ride.

The most experienced cyclists completed a 150 mile coast-to-coast bike ride from Scarborough to St. Annes over just 3 days, riding 70 miles in the first day alone! They will be stopped overnight in Pateley Bridge and were joined by 10 more of our scouts who cycled with them to the finish, riding over 70 miles across two days! Please help our group by sponsoring our riders, allowing them more great opportunities like this in scouting.

Thanks to...

A big thankyou to everyone who sponsored and helped us on our coast to coast ride, including our amazing catering and support teams who we couldn't have done it without. Thanks to the 3 scout groups that welcomed us into their huts for a place to stay along the route, and to Barlow's Trailers for the free trailer hire!

Day 1: Scarborough - Pateley Bridge

75.6 miles

DISTANCE

3886 ft

ELEVATION GAIN

An early start today to set off to the sea front, but only after bacon butties! A quick dip in the sea and we were on our way to Pateley Bridge - 75 miles away! Luckily the weather held up well all morning, and after a quick lunch stop we headed for the hills of the North York Moores. A quick stop then onto the brief flat few miles before hitting the Yorkshire Dales into Pateley bridge. Lots of up, more up, some rain, more up and a bit more rain... But finally we made it to the top of the last hill, where we descended into the finish for a brilliant Lasagne made by our amazing catering team!

Day 2: Pateley Bridge - Barnoldswick

30 miles

DISTANCE

2700 ft

ELEVATION GAIN

First up today was the HUGE hill out of Pateley Bridge, climbing over 1000ft over just 3 miles! A quick hot chocolate stop at the top to then continue through the Yorkshire Dales in some tough conditions. Wind, rain and lots of up hill, but all have risen to the challenge! Finally into Barnoldswick for curry and apple crumble, ready for tomorrows ride to the finish!

Day 3: Barnoldswick - Lytham

45 miles

DISTANCE

2000 ft

ELEVATION GAIN

Another early start this morning, with yet another big hill coming out of Barnoldswick. We pushed through the harsh conditions to the top and after a quick choccy (and blowout puncture) stop we were on our way to the Bowlands where we found lots of hills, more rain and wind... BUT our fabulous support and catering team met us on the other side of the troughs with hot jacket potatoes and cake!! We cycled the last 20 miles with only a couple of small crashes, into the finish line! A total of 150 miles with 9000ft climbed over the 3 days!
